LIGHTER SIDENEW RUNNER

Like every new 50cc scooter sold in the UK or Ireland the baby Runner is brutally slow. This is because of the licencing laws which state that all 50cc scooters must be restricted to 30mph/45kmh. If you hold a moped class M licence or a full car licence your 50cc must be restricted to these speeds. If, however you are over 17 and have the relevant licence (A1 or A) it is perfectly legal for you to remove all the restrictions although in doing so, your scooter is then considered a motorcycle and therefor must have the correct standard of lighting E.G low beam, high beam which UK/Irish spec 50cc runners don't have.

Well thats the legal jargon over with which everyone knows is rubbish because just about everyone de-restricts their 50cc straight away and its never been a problem. To give you an idea of what you should expect from your runner after de-restriction, all European market Runner 50's are sold without any restrictions and the one I rented last summer was easily able to manage 50-55mph with two people aboard and 62mph showed up on a slight hill!

Note:  It is recommended that you leave the restrictions in place untill the correct running in period for the new engine is completed
Is is also very important that all de-restrictions are carried out at the same time otherwise your Runner will run very poorly.

On the Gilera runner dd/sp50 there are 3 restrictions:
1. A spacer in the variator.
2. A resonator pipe on the exhaust.
3. inlet manifold mouth diameter restricted

1. VARIATOR

The first restriction is a small spacer fitted between the variator and the outer pully. It stops the belt from reaching the maximum distance available on the pullies. With the outer pully removed the small spacer simply slides off the shaft. Job done. See servicing section for removal of transmission case and outer pully.

2. RESONATOR PIPE

A resonator pipe reduces the speed and pressure of the gasses flowing through the exhaust to such an extent that HP(horse power) is lost. You will need to remove the resonator pipe as close to the exhaust as possible and weld a patch over the hole. With this done the standard Piaggio/Gilera pipe is an excellent unit and will work as good as most performance pipes. Although you can fit a performance exhaust if you plan further tuning as this will obviously have no resonator pipe and therefore won't be restricted.

3. INLET MANIFOLD RESTRICTION

The inlet manifold carries the air/fuel mix from the carb to the crankcase. On the right side of the picture below the smaller hole restricts the amount of mix allowed to the engine and therefor the power created. It is possible to file away the excess rubber although it is very easy to damage the manifold and also very difficult to get the correct size so it is much easier(and not very expensive) to buy a de-restricted manifold from the likes of Malossi. Once fitted you may need to fit a larger main jet to the carb to allow for the extra fuel required.
